Sextortion: Protecting Yourself Online in Fiji
Understanding Sextortion
Scammers often create fake profiles on social media platforms, pretending to be someone they’re not. They build trust and manipulate individuals into sharing explicit content. Once they have this content—or even fake images they’ve created—they threaten to distribute it unless their demands are met.
In Fiji, sharing or threatening to share intimate images without consent is illegal under the Online Safety Act 2018. Penalties can include fines up to FJD $20,000 or imprisonment for up to 5 years for individuals, and up to FJD $100,000 for corporations.
Steps to Take if You’re Targeted
- Do Not Comply: Avoid giving in to the blackmailer’s demands. Providing more content or money often leads to further exploitation.
- Cease Communication: Block the scammer on all platforms and do not engage further.
- Gather Evidence: Take screenshots of messages and note usernames, but avoid saving or sharing any explicit content.
- Report the Incident:
– To OSC: Use our Image-Based Abuse Reporting Form
– To Platforms: Report the scammer’s profile to the respective social media or messaging platform. - Inform Trusted Individuals: Let friends and family know about the situation so they can support you and be cautious of any suspicious messages.
- Secure Your Accounts: Change passwords and enhance privacy settings on all your online accounts.
