What is Telegram?

Telegram is a secure messaging and audio calling cloud-based app that allows you to send messages, photos, videos and files of any type to your contacts for free. You can also create groups for up to 200,000 people or channels for broadcasting to unlimited contacts or audiences. Telegram is designed so that the content you share is private, secure and encrypted, allowing you to have ‘secret chats’ and for the messages you send or receive to ‘self-destruct’ so they can no longer be seen by the sender or the recipient.

Telegram uses a variety of privacy technologies including encryption to make your communication secure. It also uses cloud technology to store data and synchronize accounts across multiple devices. It supports most file types that are 1.5GB or less and places no limits on the amount of content being sent. 

Creating an account on Telegram is free with a phone number, which is only visible to those already in your contact list. You can connect with other people on Telegram by searching for their username or sending invitation links.

Telegram also uses ‘bots’ (small applications which run inside the app) and provides support for developers wanting to create their own. Telegram bots may have a variety of functions including as a payment platform.

Telegram does not offer specific support for secret chats as they are not stored on their server. For publicly available content on Telegram, refer to the below resources.

What is Call of Duty?

Call of Duty is a franchise of several multiplayer first-person shooter games published by Activision. The original game focused on the Second World War, but subsequent games have been set in different times and places, including futuristic worlds and outer space. Players are put in teams with other players who they can voice chat with as they progress through the game. In-game purchasing is used to unlock extra features such as more weapons or to access new levels. Call of Duty can be played on a gaming console or PC and mobile apps are also available. Games in the franchise include Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: World at War.

What is Fortnite?

Fortnite is a third-person shooter game where up to 100 players compete to be the last person or team standing. You can compete alone or join a team of up to four. You progress through the game by exploring the island, collecting weapons, building fortifications and engaging in combat with other players. You can make purchases for access to the full game or for bonus weapons. Players communicate with other players through online messaging or voice chat. Fortnite Battle Royale is a free version of the Fortnite game.

What is WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is a free messaging, voice and video calling app that uses end-to-end encryption. All messages flowing through the platform are secured so that only the sender and the recipient can view them. The app doesn’t store your personal information, and only people you approve as contacts can message you. You can also message with groups of people. However, group messages can conflict with some privacy settings. For example, if you have blocked someone, they can still appear in a group message that you can see. The use of end-to-end encryption means that WhatsApp is unable to read your messages even if it wanted to.

Facebook Messenger, commonly known as Messenger, is a messaging app that is accessible within Facebook. You can instant message, share photos, videos, audio recordings or create a group chat with your Facebook friends or phone contacts. You can also use Messenger to voice chat and video call your friends.

What is Snapchat?

Snapchat is a messaging app that lets you send images, videos or instant text messages to friends. These images, videos and messages are only available for a short period of time once they are opened. You can also use filters on your images and upload photo and video stories that last for 24 hours before they disappear. Businesses and organisations can create their own channels. Content posted to Snapchat is not as temporary as it may appear, as users can save chats or screenshot them without the sender knowing. Adult content can also be accessed in the app. 

My AI is a chatbot available in the app, powered by Open AI’s ChatGTP technology, which can be used to answer questions, make suggestions and send feedback. Snapchat recommends that you should always independently check answers provided by My AI and not share confidential or sensitive information. 

Snapchat has an in-app tool called Family Center, which provides parents and carers with insight into who their teens (13-17) are interacting with on Snapchat. Parents cannot access the content of their children’s interactions, but they can report any accounts of concern.

What is TikTok?

The social media app TikTok, formerly known as Music.ly, allows users to create and share short videos. With TikTok, you can create and share videos featuring lip-syncing, comedy, and talent that are between 3 and 15 seconds long. You can also create videos that loop for up to 60 seconds.

What is Facebook?

Facebook is a social media service that lets you create a page about yourself, an organization or group. You can add friends, write on people’s pages, share photos and videos including live videos.

The ‘Stories’ feature lets you post short videos to your profile and apply overlay and filter effects. These videos only stay on your page for 24 hours then disappear.

You can also subscribe to the pages of other people or organisations, so that you receive updates about them. You can like and comment on each other’s pages. Facebook has additional settings that allow you to moderate these comments (such as keyword blocking) and control if other people tag you. These functions are also available if you manage a Facebook page.
